New GNRHS website

The Great Northern Railway Historical Society is happy to introduce it’s new and improved website. The new website has a fresh modern design and features integration with the most popular social media, like facebook, twitter and YouTube.

The website is fully responsive, changing layout automatically to fit computer screens, tablets and smartphones allowing for the best experience on each type of device.

The new website features a news section which allows for easy sharing of the latest GN and GNRHS news as well as easy access by different authors.

The main menu is not only a menu but also a summary of all that is the GNRHS.

The website features all well known departments but many new items will be added soon.

As the old website is quite large it will take a bit of time to convert all pages to the new website format.

Please let us know what you think. Contact the webmaster.

GNRHS on YouTube

With a new website also comes a video channel on YouTube on which we’ll be posting videos about GNRHS activities and of course our own GN SD45 #400 ‘Hustle Muscle’.

Bookmark our channel at youtube.com/user/gnrhs1973

We start of with a great video by our resident video-photographer Jeff Otto of Hustle Muscle at St. Paul Union Depot on September 20, 2014.

GNRHS Archives acquires Ora Deal Photo Collection

GN 4-6-2 1472 - Ora Deal Collection
GN 4-6-2 1472 – Ora Deal Collection

Ora Deal (1887-1960) loved trains. For many years he lived in Starkweather and Enderlin, ND where as a hobby he took pictures of Soo Line and Great Northern trains. He also belonged to a group called the International Engine Picture Club. Sponsored by The Railroadmens’ Magazine, it offered rail enthusiasts free membership to encourage them to share their pictures with one another.

The Deal collection has several hundred pictures featuring the GN and other railroads. Many were taken by Mr. Deal himself, but there are also contributions from such noted photographers as Warren McGee, Ron Nixon, John Granfors, Robert Graham, and others. The collection now will be archived with the North Dakota Railroad Museum and the GNRHS.

Our thanks go to Deal family member Diane Tollefson for her generous gift. It is men and women like Diane who help keep the memory of the Great Northern alive for today’s and future generations.
