Great Northern Railway Historical Society

Membership Benefits

GNRHS Members enjoy many benefits like our quarterly Goat publication, our yearly convention, research materials, GN modeling information and discounts in the GNRHS Store.

Publications

As a member you will receive quarterly issues of The Goat, which includes fact-filled Reference Sheets, providing in-depth historical information about specific subjects, and Modelers’ Pages describing modeling techniques and projects and new products, along with an annual calendar.

History

Explore the history of the Great Northern, its equipment, people, locations and facilities, through our Conventions, Publications and extensive Archives. The Archives exist to preserve, protect, and make available to members, historians and the general public records and photos of the Great Northern Railway. They tell the history of a railway that created many towns along its routes and helped build the economy of the region it served. This helps keep the GN alive to the public, and provide researchers and historians and modelers with invaluable resources.

Conventions

Annual conventions allow members to visit historic GN facilities, meet other members with similar interests, attend presentations on anything GN, and most of all have FUN!!

Hustle Muscle

The GNRHS owns engine GN 400, the first production EMD model SD45, featuring a unique 20-cylinder engine. The engine is now leased to the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, Minnesota and operates on the North Shore Scenic Railroad, pulling excursion trains to Two Harbors.

GNRHS Website and Online Store

The GNRHS website is a great source of information on the GNRHS and Great Northern Railway. Get the latest News and Events, read articles on the GN and access our Archives.

Enjoy a member discount at the online Company Store! Shop for books, past reference sheets, apparel, and models of structures and rolling stock often not otherwise available.

Heritage Grants

Heritage Grants support other non-profit organizations in their efforts to preserve, protect, and educate the public about the Great Northern Railway and its impact on the local and regional economy and community life. Members may donate to the Heritage Fund, and may encourage project sponsors to apply for funds.
